Our Impact
Most of the money we make from selling Original Friends Dolls goes to the women in prison who make them. This is important because prison in Mexico does not provide for all the basic needs of the inmates.
In this particular prison, Puente Grande in Jalisco, food is provided three times a day. This is not always the case in Mexico, but the prisons near Guadalajara are among the better-supplied. There are always beans and tortillas at every meal. What is NOT provided to the women is an extensive list: drinking water, toilet paper and feminine hygiene products, soap, laundry soap, shampoo, lotion, most medicines. as well as many other things.
Many of the women have no visitors to bring them the things they need. Even if they're not guilty, they often choose not to contact their families due to embarrassment and the stigma of having a family member in jail. This is a particularly big problem for female inmates, whereas male prisoners often have regular visits from wives and family members who bring them extra food and clothes and other necessities.
